Conservation zoning mulled for Palm Beach Gardens

Palm Beach Gardens is considering turning about 40 percent of its undeveloped land into conservation areas to halt urban sprawl. City commissioners take a first vote on the matter tonight, on a measure that would rezone 2,024 acres in the Loxahatchee Slough and Sandhill Crane natural areas. The slough, a shallow channel for wildlife and plants, also functions as a drainage area for nearby developments. Water from the slough helps recharge the aquifer, which provides drinking water to north county residents and flows into the Loxahatchee River.
