Miami-Dade officials were in Washington, D.C., yesterday urging
legislators to create a nationwide mortgage fraud task force modeled
on the county’s task force. The national group would oversee regional
task forces in areas with high amounts of mortgage fraud. Glenn
Theobald, chief legal counsel for the police department in Miami-Dade,
said the local task force has made more than 100 arrests but could do
more with the help of a national coordinator. The bill, put forward
last year by Representative Kendrick Meek, a Democrat from Miami,
cleared the House but not the Senate.
