In the fourth quarter of 2008, 53 percent more people nationwide were
late on their mortgage payments than in the same period of 2007,
according to data from TransUnion. Florida had a 9.52 percent mortgage
delinquency rate for the fourth quarter, the highest in the country.
Delinquent mortgage holders are those who are at least 60 days behind
on their payments. Nationally, 4.58 percent of mortgage holders were
delinquent in the fourth quarter, compared to 2.99 percent during the same period the prior year. The fourth quarter of 2008 marked the eighth straight
quarter of delinquency rate increases.
