City officials in Parkland, facing a building department budget
deficit of $550,000, have decided to fire four employees and decrease
the remaining employees’ hours. As the housing market has crashed, the
building department has had less inspection and permit work to do. The
layoffs take effect March 15. The department also considered
outsourcing the department’s work to the county or to a private
company.
