Governor Charlie Crist said his office will soon release a scaled-back plan for the state’s purchase of U.S. Sugar Corp. land, of which the state planned to buy 181,000 acres for $1.34 billion. The land would be used for Everglades restoration. Crist said he thinks the modified plan will call for the purchase of about 75,000 acres and will leave open the option for the state to purchase the rest of the land when the economy improves. The purchase price could be around $500 million, the Sun-Sentinel reported.
