Casino expansion considered

The operators of Pompano Park seek permission to expand the Isle of Capri casino and will make a request that includes plans for 60,000 feet of new retail space and a 500-room hotel. Broward County Commissioners were slated to hear the plan today. County planners back the proposal by PPI Inc., a subsidiary of St. Louis-based Isle of Capri Casinos. The company has not yet filed a formal plan, though critics say its larger goal is to phase in a large casino gambling-oriented entertainment district. West Palm Beach attorney Andrew Baumann, who represents nearby residents, said the full plan, which he found in Pompano Beach city files, would be more than twice the size of the proposal under debate today.
