Condo boards face participant shortage

Homeowners associations and condominium boards are hurting from a people power deficit — hard times are discouraging people from serving and exhausting those who do. Condo dwellers like Dorothy Saunders, treasurer of her Fort Lauderdale condo, has served for five years and sees no one willing to take on the role. The president there has had to serve for a decade. The combination of frequent criticism from non-board members and the beleaguered state of many associations’ finances thanks to foreclosures and unoccupied units makes for a daunting combination.
