Discounts seek to lure visitors

South Florida hotels are offering up to 50 percent discounts as they try to get impulse vacationers to head to the region. The catch — the discount comes only if you pay in advance. Georg Garnitschnig, sales director at the Fairmont Turnberry Isle Resort, said the trend has accelerated because hotels have had so much trouble forecasting occupancy rates. If a weekend looks slow at the start of the month but then suddenly fills up at the last minute, the hotel likely sold many of those rooms for less than they could have.
