High stakes for region as travel show ends

The Pow Wow international travel show packed up from its Miami location Wednesday, a decade after the event first came to the city. It saw a different tourist destination this year — South Beach is stylish and chic, but a global dropoff in travel reinforces the region’s dependence on tourism. South Florida hotels that turned away wholesale business from international bookers are now much more receptive to any kind of business. International visitors accounted for 48 percent of the 12 million tourists that visited Miami-Dade last year, the biggest foreign market share of any major U.S. tourist destination, Smith Travel Research said.
