John Kanas, who left private equity firm WL Ross & Co. to take the helm of BankUnited, wants to make the recapitalized institution the strongest state-chartered bank. He plans to expand commercial banking to small and medium-sized businesses and acquire other failing banks. He plans to keep most BankUnited employees, although they may be retrained and moved to different posts.
