Bankruptcies ebb slightly

Area business bankruptcy filings for May dropped slightly from last year and indicated a slowing in the overall filing rate for South Florida. The nine-county area covered by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Florida said 93 businesses filed bankruptcy petitions in May. That’s a 25 percent drop from April, which saw 124 filings, and down 6 percent from last May’s 99 filings. Consumer bankruptcies dropped by 2 percent in May, to 2,358 from 2,309 in April. That was 44.4 percent higher than last May’s total of 1,633 consumer filings.
