The East Coast Protection Levee, weakened by Tropical Storm Fay, has vulnerable stretches along its 105 miles, and parts of Broward and Miami-Dade counties are particularly exposed, according to federal safety inspectors. The Army Corp of Engineers will step up inspections, and the South Florida Water Management District proposes to spend about $60 million over the next five years to strengthen the East Coast Protection Levee. New levee ratings could cost homeowners more in property insurance policies or make policies harder to get.
