Drywall woes could mean tax break

The Broward County property appraiser’s office said homeowners with defective Chinese drywall could see lower property taxes, reflecting the impact on house values. Ron Gunzburger, general counsel for the appraiser’s office, said documentation is vital, and that insurance claim requests, lawsuits and calls for help from mortgage lenders would all be grounds for a reduction in value. Documents must be received by September 18. As many as 100,000 houses nationwide have been affected by the foul smelling panels, which can corrode wiring and fixtures and may be linked to health problems.
