Florida has seen a record number of complaints so far this year waged against lawyers involved in loan modifications, according to the state attorney general. Mortgage-holders have lodged 756 complaints regarding attorney-assisted loan modifications, compared to just 61 complaints filed in 2008. Arne Vanstrum, director of the Florida Bar Association’s Consumer Assistance Program, said that the mortgage scamming business is rapidly growing among lawyers, particularly in southern Florida. “There has definitely been a trend in the last six months or year where attorneys are having some involvement in loan modification scams,” Vanstrum said.
