South Florida’s landmark horse racing track, Hialeah Park, will reopen Nov. 28 after a massive facelift that has workers pulling double shifts to finish the first phase of its restoration. Hialeah, which opened in 1925, will once again hold a race season in November and December, and another in January and February. Though slot machines likely will not arrive at the park for another year, local politicians hope its reopening will boost the state’s gambling industry and improve the economy in Hialeah, Miami-Dade’s second-largest municipality. A city study showed that the revitalized racetrack would bring about 11,000 new jobs to the area. [Miami Herald]
