Broward presses Crist for state of emergency over toxic drywall

Broward County has requested that Gov. Charlie Crist declare a state
of emergency over the toxic Chinese drywall that has tarnished the
homes of many of its residents. The request, pushed by Commissioner
Stacy Ritter, asks that federal and state aid become available to
affected residents in the same way that it is when area homes are
damaged by hurricanes. The county said such measures are necessary
because insurance companies have been denying drywall claims in large
numbers, leaving homeowners to their own devices to deal with ruined
appliances, sulfurous odors and corroded pipes and wires. Many say the
defective drywall has made them ill. [Sun Sentinel]
