Contractors pessimistic on construction growth in 2010

The Associated General Contractors of America, a national trade group, surveyed its members and found that 90 percent believe there won’t be an industry recovery in 2010. Chief executive Stephen Sandherr said this year’s construction outlook is far from positive and that employment growth will continue to lag. There won’t be much new hiring this year, nor will there be big outlays for new equipment, he said. In Florida, 93 percent of state contractors cut jobs in 2009. Only 21 percent plan to hire new workers, and 21 plan to cut jobs. About 21 percent of Florida contractors plan to add workers in 2010, while 21 percent plan to make more job cuts, according to the report. [SFBJ]
