Palm Beach taxpayers feel the building bust

The new taxpayer-funded office building that was supposed to speed the development process in
Palm Beach County is now a victim of the property collapse there.
The $42 million Vista Center offices project, which opened in 2006
on Jog Road in West Palm Beach, was intended to house the county’s permit
department, building inspectors and other government agencies that would be needed to keep up with a surge in construction. Now, the county no longer has
funds to complete the renovations of the old department headquarters
at Airport Center off Australian Avenue, and departments at Vista Center have been shedding staffers. The county borrowed $90 million to pay for the Vista project, nearly $8 million of which was due this year. [Sun Sentinel]
