State investigates timeshare resale schemes in Palm Beach

Timeshare resales have surpassed mortgage fraud as the number one
source of complaints to a state fraud hotline, Attorney General
Bill McCollum’s office says. The AG has subpoenaed 17 timeshare companies in March, and 10 of them are in what
appears to be the center of the problem: Palm Beach County. The scams
typically involve promises of ready sales in exchange for title fees or
other charges — then the owners front the fees and realize no
potential buyer exists. There have been over 10,000 timeshare
complaints in the last three years, according to the AG’s office and the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. [Palm Beach Post]
