The sad fate of the Grand Bay Hotel, once Miami’s best

In the 1980s, Coconut Grove’s Coconut Grove Hotel was one of the places
to be seen in Miami. The first floor had the Grand Cafe, and on the
thirteenth sat Regine’s, which was reputed to sell more champagne than
anywhere in America. By the beginning of the decade, the hotel had lost
its luster, falling to just three stars in 2001. The Merco Group, led
by Homero Meruelo and his family, bought the site in 2005, with
intentions of building the property to what it had once been. Now, the building sits, abandoned, the object of a foreclosure action in August. Merco has had more trouble in Coconut Grove, with a nearby office space similarly in foreclosure. [Miami Herald]
