Central Fort Lauderdale declared “blighted,” slated for public aid

A 344-acre portion of central Fort Lauderdale has been declared “blighted” and designated as a Community Redevelopment Agency zone by a unanimous vote from city commissions, making it eligible for grants and other public funding to help its revitalization. Redevelopment efforts in the new Middle River-South Middle River-Sunrise Boulevard zone are expected to center upon 13th Street, where residents are hoping for a strengthened business corridor. Northwest Fort Lauderdale, Progresso and Flagler Village are already considered CRA zones. Broward County tentatively agreed to grant its approval to the new CRA zone under the condition that only city property tax dollars — not county tax dollars — would be redirected towards the area’s improvement.
