Hialeah housing employees plead guilty to fraud

Two former Hialeah Housing Authority employees, an affordable housing property manager and an office clerk, have copped to a fraudulent rent scheme that allowed them to pocket almost $14,000. Delma Mercado and Anacelys Bencomo pleaded guilty yesterday to charges of forgery, fraud and grand theft in connection to the scheme, through which they altered rent checks and pocketed agency money. Mercado, the manager who collected and processed rent payments, will serve six months behind bars and must pay back the $13,700 she swindled, as part of a plea agreement. Bencomo will serve two years house arrest.
