Patches of tar the size of pancakes have washed up on several beaches in
the town of Palm Beach, scattered between Phipps Ocean Park and Midtown
Beach. There were about 24 such balls, according to Jay Boodheshwar,
Palm Beach’s acting Public Works director. “They look like pancakes or
Frisbees,” he said. “There is an abnormal amount of material compared to
what the lifeguards usually see.” A county environmental official, Dan
Bates, said it was unlikely the tar was from the Deepwater Horizon
spill, but it will take about five days to learn the results of tests. [Palm
