A proposal approved by the Legislature last year would give people who
have not owned a home for at least eight years an added, temporary
homestead exemption on primary residences bought after Jan. 1 of this
year. But the proposal, which would come in the form of a constitutional
amendment,  is now taking heat from labor unions and a taxpayer group.
The Florida AFL-CIO has filed a lawsuit to remove Amendment 3 from
Florida’s ballot in November. The amendment would give qualifying
homeowners an extra exemption of at least 25 percent in the first year. [Palm
