Jeff Greene, the developer who earlier this month announced his candidacy
for the Democratic nomination for Mel Martinez’ Senate seat, attacked
his rival, U.S. congressman Kendrick Meek, on his ties to a developer, Dennis
Stackhouse, charged with fraud. According to police records, Meek
allegedly sought millions in federal funding for Stackhouse to build a
high-tech park in Liberty City, after Stackhouse helped Meek’s chief of
staff buy a house and paid Meek’s mother $90,000 for “consulting.”
According to the charges, Stackhouse took $1 million in public and
private loans, and the park was never built. Meek has said he had no
knowledge of the relationships and that the project had been “hijacked
by a greedy developer years ago.” Greene, a developer himself,
reportedly built much of his fortune betting against subprime loans. [Miami Herald]
