David Stern, a Plantation-area attorney accused of fabricating documents in foreclosure cases, has laid off 70 percent of his staff. The move, which eliminated about 560 jobs at the firm, came after mortgage agency Freddie Mac stopped sending referrals to Stern. In a memo to his staff, Stern said that the number of new businesses being referred to his company has dropped 90 percent over the last six months. Brad German, a Freddie Mac spokesperson, said that he would forward the new foreclosure referrals to other firms to ensure that “they can be completed in compliance with state law.” [Miami Herald]
