Joseph Andriola, who led the Coral Gables office of SB Architects
through the downturn, died yesterday in a car crash in China. His firm
was designing a project on the Chinese island of Hainan. The firm, once
known as Sandy & Babcock, had to dismiss workers and cut salaries
during the real estate bust, something that was difficult for Andriola.
But foreign contracts helped the firm begin hiring again. Andriola
studied architecture at the University of Florida and at Columbia
University. He joined Sandy & Babcock in the 1990s and was promoted
to partner five years ago. The firm is based in San Francisco. [Miami
