Palm Beach County planners said yesterday they have planned for enough
housing development to meet demand for the next 20 years. Currently,
there is a 13.6 percent vacancy rate in housing in the county, or
roughly 88,700 homes, although it has typically been 5 percent. “We
don’t believe this is the time to do those big policy changes,” said
County Planning Director Lorenzo Aghemo. The last update to the county
plan was in 2004, when 25,000 residents were moving into the county each
year. But population projections now show that about 300,000 less
people will live in the county in 2030 than was initially predicted.
