Developer of Avalon, South Seas hotels dies

Donelson Glassie Jr., a sailor, entrepreneur and real estate developer who owned hotels in Florida and New York, as well as three inns in Rhode Island, has died, according to the Providence Journal. Glassie’s death was confirmed this past Friday by his oldest daughter, Elizabeth Doucett who said her father, 76, died the morning before at the Memorial Sloane-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. A father of six, Glassie ran the Yankee Peddler Inn on Touro Street, and later developed the Harborside Inn, both in Newport. He then turned the former Newport police station into the Jailhouse Inn. He eventually opened two more hotels in Miami Beach, the Avalon and the South Seas, and more recently, the Park South and Strand Hotels in New York City. Glassie was also well known in the sailing world as the skipper of the 1926-vintage racing schooner Fortune, which he sailed up and down the New England coast. [Providence Journal]
