The father-son team of developers, Mauricio Cohen Assor, 77, and Leon
Cohen-Levy, 46, have been sentenced to 10 years each for tax evasion. U.S.
District Judge William Zloch ordered Cohen Assor to pay $9.38 million in
restitution, and his son was ordered to pay $7.76 million. “American
taxpayers who seek anonymity and shelter behind foreign bank accounts in
tax haven jurisdictions are simply running out of places to hide,” U.S.
Attorney Wifredo Ferrer said in a news release. The Cohens were also
found guilty of providing false documents to banks and perjury in a
civil lawsuit in New York. [SFBJ]
