Some seek foreclosure overhaul

Florida has more loans in foreclosure than the total number in 22
states, according to a report from the Mortgage Bankers Association.
The state’s percentage of nationwide foreclosures is 23.7 according to
the report. The news has led some to call for an overhaul of Florida’s
judicial system of foreclosures, which is still struggling to work
through the glut despite the addition of more judges to handle cases.
One Palm Beach County Judge canceled a foreclosure hearing because a
lack of funding prevented judges from presiding over cases beginning
July 1. “For the economics of a court to bleed into the language of
orders in cases is completely unprecedented,” said foreclosure defense
attorney Ron Bilu. “This is a cry for help from the court saying this is
the beginning of us stripping away the rights of due process.” [Palm
