Broward County is considering a purchase of the former BJ”s Wholesale Club in Sunrise, which closed in January and was later hit with a foreclosure lawsuit. The 104,114-square-foot warehouse is owned by Oakland University Associates, a subsidiary of a New York-based developer that wants to build a 70,000-square-foot Broward Supervisor of Elections operations center on the county’s behalf. The county has a $10.8 million budget for that project, and could theoretically locate it there, with the additional space at the warehouse being used for storage. There’s also 34,000 square feet worth of retail space at the site, part of which is leased to Chuck E Cheese’s. Oakland has $7.5 million outstanding on its mortgage for the property. [SFBJ]
