Palm Beach’s Publix supermarket closed on Saturday, paving the way for a
demolition of the 40-year-old building ahead of a large-scale
renovation
. A new, 45,000-square-foot Mediterranean Revival-style
building will open in its place in mid-December. But the hiatus means
Palm Beach residents will have to commute off the island to shop for
food, as it is the town’s largest market. “I live next to it, so I’ll
have to cross the bridge and go to CityPlace [n West Palm Beach],” said
Badia Salahi. “It’s the nearest one.” Other stores, like Palm Beach’s
Amici Market, said they will try to offer more products to help out
inconvenienced residents. [Palm
