Federal investigators from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission have begun a
“special inspection” at the Turkey Point nuclear plant in Miami-Dade
County, after employees heard a “loud
bang
” last Thursday. The safety of the plant was not impacted by
the event, which saw a two-foot-wide valve slam shut and fail to
re-open. “As always, when the NRC comes in, we are going to be candid
and open,” said FPL spokesperson Dick Winn. These kinds of inspections
happen once or twice a year at a nuclear plant, according to the NRC.
“The main reasons for a special inspection are to see if it was the kind
of thing that might have been preventable.” [Miami
