Stambaugh cottage is ready to be moved

Stambaugh cottage, a historic home on the grounds of the Palm Beach Country Club, has been placed on steel beams and is being prepared for removal, the Palm Beach Daily News reported. It is slated to be rolled across North Lake Way and onto a barge on the lagoon Friday, and then on to an as-yet undetermined location.

Peanut Island, the South Florida Fairgrounds and two other sites are being considered, said Pat Burdette, owner of Modern House and Building Movers.

Last month, Palm Beach council officials said there were still questions about whether it would accept the historic Stambaugh Cottage in Palm Beach as a gift, including how much it would cost to maintain. The Stambaugh family had been raising money to move it and to save it from demolition. The Palm Beach Country Club had suggested demolishing the home to make way for a new caretaker’s facility but is accommodating the family’s attempts to salvage the property by donating it to the town.
