Dania Beach approves settlement for homeowners near new airport runway

The Dania Beach City Commission approved a settlement for residents who would be affected by the development of a new, $790 million runway at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, the Miami Herald reported.

Under the agreement, owners of the 857 homes most affected by sound pollution have two options from which they can choose. Either they can get sales assistance from the Federal Aviation Association — which will sell about 22 homes each year depending on the market — which will make up the difference in price if it’s sold below market value, or they can accept a payment from Broward County equaling 20 percent of their home’s value, provided they vow not to partake in any lawsuit. They must choose within a year.

Moreover, owners of 1,700 nearby homes will be eligible for $80,000 to soundproof their properties.

Now the Broward County Commission and the FAA must sign off on the settlement. [Miami Herald]
