Does Miami’s Omni neighborhood still need a redevelopment zone?

The once-run-down Omni neighborhood in Miami has seen a large-scale
transformation in recent years, from the Arsht Center to a wave of new
restaurants and condominium towers. But the area’s rebirth has led some
to question whether it still needs a redevelopment agency — and the tax
assistance that goes with it, according to the Miami Herald. “I think
you can say at a certain point of time that slum and blight has been
cleaned up,” said Miami Commissioner Marc Sarnoff. “I think pockets of
the Omni have done very well. And if Genting invests, then it’s
conceivable [to dissolve the agency].” Fellow Commissioner Frank Carollo
said that the fund should be made smaller, but not dissolved. [Miami
