Florida scam targets vacation rentals
A family from Suriname planning to vacation in Florida got an unexpected
welcome when the home they thought they had rented for 10 days was
occupied — by its owner. They’re the latest in a series of victims of Internet fraud, and one of a number of people who have knocked on the
door of Steve Chase’s million-dollar home in Fort Lauderdale. “I said, ‘I hate to say it to
you, but this house is not for rent,'” he said. “‘You’ve been
scammed.'” The fraudsters list the addresses of random homeowners and
take the money upfront. “The poor people who have come and expect to
rent our houses, it’s a shame,” said June Beard, Chase’s neighbor, who
said she herself has had to turn away five separate would-be renters
from her home. [Sun
