Work begins on floating Keys resort

It’s been a decade in the works, but some construction has started on the floating Oceana resort off of Key West, the Miami Herald reported. The Oceana Water Resort in the Gulf of Mexico still requires government permits, however. “We’re going forward on that end of it,” said Doug Pope, who is spearheading the project. “We’re not going real fast or pushing to get it done, but we have started.” Pope first contacted the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary about the project in 2010. He still requires approval from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to place the resort on the open-water site. “We’re waiting,” he said. “I understand since no one has ever done this before, it’s taking them a while to figure things out.” [Miami Herald]
