PBC permits more development on Reserve

March 30, 2012 12:00PM

Development continues to encroach Palm Beach County’s Agricultural Reserve.

The Sun Sentinel reported that the County Commission voted this week to allow additional agricultural packing houses on land that taxpayers spent $100 million protecting for farming and other agricultural production. The change could allow for 20 new packing plants in the Reserve where there are now just five.

Environmentalists say the continued development exemptions have “corrupted” the Reserve. But commissioners say that the changes will help farming survive on the Reserve. Further, they point out, it’s better than housing developments snapping up prime far land. However, the commission also approved new medical facilities on the Reserve to compliment a new hospital being built just off the area west of Boynton Beach.
