Mortgage fraud a “high priority,” FBI director says

While the Federal Bureau of Investigation continues to focus on counterterrorism, it is working significantly on fighting mortgage and other financial fraud, FBI director Robert Mueller said during a speech to the Miami Chamber of Commerce yesterday, the Miami Herald reported. “We have not neglected our criminal responsibilities,” he said. “What has changed is that we make greater use of intelligence and partnerships to focus our limited resources.” Mortgage fraud has changed over the years, now consisting of “schemes aimed at distressed homeowners, such as loan modification, scams and phony foreclosure resources,” he said.
