PortMiami’s new twin-tunnel system will open to public traffic by the third week of May, according to Chris Hodgkins, vice president for MAT Concessionaire LLC, the project’s contractor.

Also known as the Miami Access Tunnel, the project took years of planning and cost more than $1 billion, according to Miami Today.

The tunnels will provide road access to PortMiami from the MacArthur Causeway, allowing traffic to bypass the central business district.

“The Port of Miami Tunnel is a first in the US – a technically challenging transport construction project implemented through a public-private partnership where no tolls are charged,” Jeffrey Parker, an advisor for the Florida Department of Transportation, said. [Miami Today] Christopher Cameron
