After facing fierce opposition from Coconut Grove residents, a planned trolley garage may be heading back to Coral Gables.

The developer is now considering a plan to build the garage underneath a new luxury high-rise condominium project that developer Henry Torres hopes to erect on Le Jeune Road, near tony Merrick Park, according the Miami Herald.

However, the city would still need to use the 12-bay depot in Coconut Grove that neighbors bitterly oppose while the new depot is being constructed. The depot in the 3300 block of Douglas Road in West Grove would be in use for two or three years, Coral Gables City Attorney Craig Leen said.

Yet some are still dissatisfied with the plan. “I’m afraid it would never go away,” said resident Clarice Cooper, who lives across the street from the garage and has filed a complaint with the U.S. Federal Transit Administration. “Two years can seem like a lifetime.” [Miami Herald] – Christopher Cameron
