A mixed-use apartment complex is being planned for a vacant 12-acre field near Delray Beach’s historic train station.

City commissioners gave initial approval to the $20 million Depot Square Apartments in advance of a final vote on the site plan scheduled on July 9. The Caribbean-themed Depot Square would include 284 apartments, with 71 units dedicated to affordable workforce housing. The complex is designed with a mix of one, two and three-bedroom apartments.

The development would also include an entertainment center inside a 7,500-square-foot clubhouse and a swimming pool with a barbecue area, putting green and outdoor pool table, according to the Sun-Sentinel. City officials hope the project provides much-needed housing inventory near where residents work. The project site is minutes away from Delray’s downtown, south of Lake Ida Road. • If they use their plan which calls for a shared path for bikers and walkers to get to Lake Ida Park and downtown Atlantic Avenue, that would be great. The new Complex in Delray Beach on Congress just seems slow and unexciting. The area could use some modern Apartments.
