James Engel and his wife Gaye have gotten the OK to start building their new lakefront home in the Estate Section.

The couple paid $7.6 million for the property earlier this month. On Wednesday they received the go-ahead from the Architectural Commission to build their new digs at 176 Kings Road.

The Engles bought the five-bedroom house at the half-acre location — including 162 feet of waterfront — from Mamoru and Myriam Hirai. The Hirais, who are based in Japan, have spent vacations at the house for the past 23 years and owned it through KCC Florida Development Corp. The couple sold the 8,460-square-foot property because they said they couldn’t use it as much any more due to their schedules.

The Engels’ new two-story home was designed by Daniel Kahan of Smith and Moore Architects. [Palm Beach Daily News] — Claire Moses
