Miami commissioners voted to spend up to $16 million to upgrade the area surrounding the Miami Marine Stadium and host the Miami International Boat Show in 2016.
Commissioners authorized a bond issue to pay for improvements to a 15-acre area outside the stadium, the Miami Herald reported, which includes seven undeveloped acres east of the stadium that will be paved and covered with artificial turf. Also approved was a license agreement with the boat show.
In November 2014, the city rejected a proposal by preservation group Friends of Miami Marine Stadium to fund a $30 million renovation and use private money to redevelop the area surrounding the stadium. [Miami Herald] — Katherine Kallergis
