The country is looking to lose its moniker as an "architect's playground"

From the New York website: “Weird” and unusual architecture may soon be a thing of the past in China, following a directive issued by the Chinese State Council that calls for an end to “bizarre” and “oversized” buildings.

The directive, which was issued in February, said that buildings should instead be “economic, eco-friendly and pleasing to the eye.”

In recent years, China has become known as an “architect’s playground” thanks to its booming economy and an enthusiastic import of international starchitects.
