On the scene at Playa Largo Resort & Spa’s grand opening in Key Largo: PHOTOS

The developers of Playa Largo Resort & Spa, Key Largo’s first new full-service hotel to open its doors since the 1990s, recently held a grand celebration for the resort’s launch day.

Executives from Prime Hospitality Group and Shaner Hotels, the two development partners, showed up along with dozens of guests to check out the 14-acre hotel’s features. The 144-room resort opened nine months late after breaking ground in early 2014.

Playa Largo is part of Marriott International’s Autograph Collection, a chain of luxury hotels that are typically independently owned. Room rates range from $249 to $549 per night, and the hotel features everything from three in-house restaurants to 745 feet of beachfront with a tiki bar, three tennis courts, a spa and wedding lawn that can house up to 650 people.

The resort was built over the old American Outdoors Campground at 97450 Overseas Highway. — Sean Stewart-Muniz
