Designing homes by algorithm

From TRD New York: Designers are ditching drafting software and embracing math. With the rising popularity of prefabricated housing. designers are turning to algorithms to help them create the perfect home.

The L.A.-based startup Cover has created an equation it says makes the design process highly efficient. The company creates prefab housing built around a customer’s specific needs using a proprietary program.

“Once customers begin the design process, Cover sends them a survey of about 50 to 100 questions to inform the design. It asks about lifestyle–how many people typically cook a meal and what appliances are must-haves?–and structural needs, like should they optimize one view and block another one?” according to Curbed.

Currently they specialize in “accessory dwelling units,” which is a secondary structure on a property with an existing single-family house, according to Curbed. And the big advantage is timing. It takes just three business days and $250 to design a unit and 12 weeks for building and installation.
