Mar-a-Lago’s extra layer of security might come in handy now that the president of the United States is making frequent visits to the Palm Beach resort.

A little-known fact about Mar-a-Lago is that cereal heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post had three bomb shelters installed during the Korean War. Donald Trump has said in the past that of all his properties with bomb shelters – Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach and his estate in Westchester, New York – Mar-a-Lago is his top pick, he told Esquire in 2007.

Underneath Mar-a-Lago, built by Merriweather Post in 1927, are dozens of bathrooms, more than 24 bathrooms, two pools and a walkway that leads to the beach, the Palm Beach Daily News reported.

While the shelters have mostly been used as storage, the bomb shelters may give visiting world leaders and top members of Trump’s administration a sense of security.

Last weekend, the president hosted Chinese President Xi Jinping at Mar-a-Lago, which resulted in a $1.5 million security tab, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. This coming weekend will mark Trump’s seventh visit to Mar-a-Lago since he took office in January. [Palm Beach Daily News] – Katherine Kallergis
